Ear wax removal

Ear wax is not a sign of poor hygiene. It is the ear’s own cleaning system, and in most people it works its way out without help. In some it builds up, often in people who wear hearing aids or earplugs, or who have narrow or hairy ear canals.

Microsuction

Our usual method is microsuction. We look into your ear through magnifying loupes with a bright light and use a fine, gentle suction tip to lift the wax out. There is no water, so it suits people with a perforated eardrum or a history of ear infections. You will hear a whooshing noise, a bit like a vacuum in the next room.

Before your appointment

If the wax is hard, use two drops of olive oil in the ear each night for three to five days before you come. It softens the wax and makes removal quicker. Please do not use cotton buds: they push wax further in.

Prices

£60 for one ear, £75 for both. If we cannot clear it in one visit, we book a second within a week at no charge.
