Which appointment do you need?

Tinnitus assessment and sound therapy

Hearing-aid aftercare and repairs
Included with our aids · 30 minutes
Adjustments, deep cleans, tube and dome changes and repairs. Included for Hearwick patients; a fixed fee for aids fitted elsewhere.
Eight minutes and a pair of headphones, for a rough answer.
Ten pitches, one ear at a time, each played quieter until you stop hearing it. You get a simple chart and an honest suggestion. It is not a test, but it tells you whether booking one is worth it.
Before you start
- Find a quiet room and put on headphones, wired or wireless.
- Set your volume to about half, then play the volume tone.
- Adjust until the tone is soft but clear in both ears, then leave the volume alone.
Nothing plays until you press a button. About 20 tones, 6 to 8 minutes.
Right ear · 1,000 Hz
Press play, listen, then answer. You can play a tone again before answering.
Not a diagnosis. This check cannot know how loud your headphones play, and it tests tones, not speech. It is a rough guide to whether a full hearing test is worth booking. If you have sudden hearing loss, pain, discharge or dizziness, contact your GP or NHS 111 today.
Owned by the audiologists who test you
Hearwick opened on Weaver’s Row in 2011. We are not part of a chain and no manufacturer owns us, so nobody sets us a sales target. We fit what suits your ears, your hands and your budget, and we tell you when you do not need hearing aids at all. About a third of the people we test leave without them.

What patients can hear again
Four people, four kinds of hearing care, and how long each took to feel normal.
-
What I can hear again: The quizmaster from the back of the pub
“I had stopped going to quiz night because I could never catch the questions. The first week back I got a round of applause for an answer.”
G. T., Bayston Hill
-
What I can hear again: The kettle clicking off
“They found wax first and took it out on the spot. My hearing was mostly fine after that. Nobody tried to sell me anything.”
M. A., Shrewsbury
-
What I can hear again: The quiet child at the back of the class
“Anna set the programmes around my week: one for the classroom, one for the car. I forget I am wearing them until they need charging.”
R. D., Church Stretton
-
What I can hear again: Rain on the conservatory roof, instead of the ringing
“The whistling in my ears used to keep me up. The sound therapy sessions did more than the aids, and they told me that honestly.”
P. K., Wem

Common questions, straight answers
Pick a topic. If yours is not here, ring or text us: an audiologist answers.
Hearing tests
- Is the hearing test really free?
- Yes. The full 60-minute test is free and there is no obligation to buy anything. We charge £65 only if you need a written report for work, a driving licence or an insurer.
- What happens during the test?
- We ask about your hearing and health, look in both ears with an otoscope, then you listen to tones and words through headphones in our quiet room. We show you your audiogram and explain it before you leave.
- Should I bring someone with me?
- If you can, yes. A familiar voice helps with the speech test, and it is easier to remember what was said when two people heard it.
- How accurate is the online hearing check?
- It is a rough guide, not a test. It cannot know how loud your headphones are, and it only checks tones, not speech. If it suggests any difficulty, or you notice problems, book a full test.
Hearing aids
- How much do hearing aids cost?
- From £1,195 a pair for Essential behind-the-ear aids to £3,295 a pair for Premium rechargeable aids. Every price includes fitting and the aftercare of its tech level, with no separate service plan.
- Can I try hearing aids before I pay for them?
- Yes. You wear them at home for up to 30 days. If they are not right, we change them or refund you in full, less £95 for the fitting appointments.
- Which makes do you fit?
- We are independent and fit aids from several of the large manufacturers. We choose on your hearing, your hands, your eyesight and your budget, not on a supplier target.
- How long does it take to get used to them?
- Most people settle in two to six weeks. Your own voice and the rustle of paper sound odd at first. We see you at two and six weeks to adjust them.
Tinnitus
- Can tinnitus be cured?
- Usually not, but it can become much less noticeable. Most of our patients find it bothers them far less within three months of sound therapy and advice.
- Do I need hearing aids for tinnitus?
- Not always. If you also have hearing loss, aids often help because they bring back the background sound that masks the ringing. If you do not, we will say so.
- What is in a tinnitus appointment?
- A full hearing test, a questionnaire about how the tinnitus affects you, and 30 minutes on what it is and what helps. You leave with a written plan.
- When should I see a GP first?
- If the noise is in one ear only, beats in time with your pulse, or came on suddenly with dizziness or hearing loss, see your GP first. We will tell you the same if we find it.
